As one of our most prestigious degrees, BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery is delivered by the Royal School of Needlework in dedicated studio apartments at Hampton Court Palace, Surrey. This is the only specialist Degree in hand embroidery. Students engage with both contemporary and traditional hand embroidery practice and explore creative approaches to visual, design and theoretical research.
Degree students are fully immersed in the highly specialist discipline of hand embroidery, developing couture level skills for private clients and industry. They showcase their hand embroidery skills by working on esteemed in-house and externally commissioned projects.
Collaborations have included Alexander McQueen; Hussein Chalayan; Nicholas Oakwell Couture; Patrick Grant for E.Tautz menswear; Ralph & Russo; Zandra Rhodes; Jasper Conran; Burberry; Liberty and the V&A; Maddux Creative for Decorex; Sheme Shoes; Mr.X-Stitch; HBO / Game of Thrones and creating an embroidered den for HRH The Duchess of Cambridge’s ‘Back to Nature’ garden for the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in 2019.
Graduate success stories have included working for the film and television industry and Haute Couture as freelance designer makers. Some progress to postgraduate study and a number have been awarded Trade Freeman of the City of London, for their continued contribution to the art of hand embroidery.
As well as their hand embroidery skills, students create their own intricate high-end Collections and develop their portfolios using digital and hand rendered design skills. By applying creative approaches to drawing, design and practice-based research, students embark upon their ambitious final Major Projects, which you can see here.
