“The Embodiment of Craft” is an expression of embroidery as the personification of both Art and Craft. Alex Hawes challenges the distinction between Art and Craft by taking floral motifs reminiscent of Dutch Still-life flower paintings and portraying them using traditional embroidery techniques and authentic Craft materials.
Alex’s embroidery is a crossover between tradition and innovation since, using her technical training at the Royal School of Needlework, she employs Goldwork, Crewelwork, and Ribbon Embroidery with more modern beading and fabric manipulation to create her floral motifs. The artist places heavy meaning on the authenticity of craft materials by using Harris Tweed, Silk, and Wool in her work to remain true to the heritage of Craft.
