Ana Maria Lopes makes ceramic objects that represent an emotional response to the memory of the place where she grew up in rural Brazil – which she describes as her ‘soul home’. As she has moved away, the evocative power of the tactile experiences and memories are triggered by the touch and smell of the soil from her family’s farm. It is a point of contact, a way of reducing the physical distance. She uses samples of the earth from the farm to colour the objects she makes. The abstract forms’ surfaces present an interplay between rough and smooth and allude to the colours of the land.
