Theme

My work is based on religious horror, in particular, Catholicism. For this ten-week project I wanted to push myself to visually recreate a piece of my own writing, challenging the boundary between visual and textual communication.

I was inspired by Catholic works within churches and the romantic artists William Blake, John Constable and Caspar David Frederic, whose works all contain religious themes and backgrounds for the artists themselves.

My Book is accompanied by four paintings which depict scenes around the story within. My story is based around a person’s internal monologue as they are pursued by their church and its people. They encounter a mysterious figure and are assumed to have been forgiven, only for the Church to catch up to them and prove this wrong. The viewer is left to interpret for what reason this all came about.
