Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media Practice - Canterbury

Theme

My Final Major Project is inspired by my experience of discovering different lifestyles attached to places as an international student and through past travels, and noticing the different life opportunities that each place seems to offer. I aimed to represent the atmospheres I perceived in four towns that particularly struck me – Canterbury, Brussels, Jerusalem and Porto- as well as to highlight the way that each place’s features impact its inhabitants. The overarching aim is to provoke interest and compassion for other people’s experiences related to the place they live in. After gathering research about each city, I have worked around specific characteristics that stood out to me about every town, notably involving underlying issues. The concertinas have been composed in Photoshop using mixed media artworks. The fronts of the concertinas illustrate the places’ chosen features and my own experience of the towns; the backs highlight current and past issues related to them. Finally, all the concertinas are linked by their common packaging, a blizzard book.
