Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media Practice - Farnham

When I started my project I wanted to explore all of light because it is a medium I knew very little about. I wanted to expand my knowledge so that in the future I will be able to use it better in my practice. I quickly became entranced by infinity mirrors- particularly Yayoi Kusama and Ivan Navarro’s work- but realised that an infinity room may be a bit too ambitious.

My gas cloud installation is exploring how tiny and insignificant humanity is when thinking about infinity. Often we think the world revolves around us- to the point where travelling into space is little more than politics. I have explored this by making a propaganda poster inspired by Space Invaders and vintage space posters. I have set up my installation like an arcade game, heavily inspired by Matt Elson and immersive arcade games such as Halo, to give my work a mysterious and playful twist. I want people to feel a sense of awe when they look into work and to feel- even just momentarily- transported to a space not available in our reality. I have painted the outside of my box to resemble rusted metal- while still obviously being fake to fit the arcade theme. I was originally going to design it to look like a rocket but I feel that a rusted metal floating box with no explanation feels more sinister. After all, we are living on a dying planet.

The gas cloud installation is made of glass, pewter and bronze while the infinity mirrors and structure have been made with mirrors, reflective film, LEDs, foam board and wood. My work has been set up so that you sit in a chair to view it; which I hope will make my work more accessible to wheelchair users and others who may find it easier to sit than stand for long periods of time.

If all goes to plan, I will be studying BA Production Arts for Screen at Wimbledon College of Arts next year but I am very glad I came for my foundation at UCA Farnham. You can find me on Instagram @emiloop_art
