My MA series, ‘Winging it’ is an ode to a precarious existence in an unrepresentative society. With links to the Jungian theory of the ‘Transcendent Function’, the work represents a potential new way forward in response to the failures of a prevailing mainstream model that privileges material wealth and marginalises those who don’t buy into it, causing devastation to the planet as it goes. My work is coastal, inspired by tidal accretions found on the shoreline, formed from the convergence of natural forms with eroding structures. It has survived being pushed to its limit, teetering on and just over the edge, melting, falling, failing and merging; a commentary on the liminal space just before and just after destruction, from which a new identity may emerge.
