My final degree project is entitled ‘Intangible Craft’, intended as a contradiction in terms. My mixed media and handwoven textiles respond to the loss of physical touch experienced during the pandemic, a sense that is central to textiles and to craft practice. I have explored woven quilting, laser-cutting, 3D printing, clay and jesmonite casting to create enhanced tactile surfaces, and considered how light and shadow, captured through photography and video, can be used to digitally reveal the tactile qualities of my outcomes. My textiles intend to reach out to the senses, in ways that are soothing and grounding when safety, comfort and protection have become priorities.
All of my textiles have been handwoven and I have used a combination of recycled materials, hand-dyed and redundant mill yarns.
