Project Isolation was created as a Final Major Project for my third year studying BA Computer Games Design at the Rochester campus.
I am a horror and prison enthusiast. So, it was only fitting to put the two together for my FMP. The inspiration for doing a prison ‘style’ horror game was down to the TV show Prison Break. Project Isolation was created within two units. A pre-production unit and post-production unit.
The pre-production unit consisted of creating an idea for a game from scratch. The game had to have a story. Given Project Isolation had a duration of 10 – 15 minutes, I kept the story short and sweet. The story was that something strange was happening in Isolation prison, people started unexpectedly losing their lives to this tall, well-suited, 6ft figure. It is the player’s mission to find out what is happening.
As well as the story, I came up with model sketches, audio and music samples and environment layout in Unity Engine throughout which had to have at least one game mechanic. Mine was that an enemy would aimlessly walk around in the environment and when the player encountered the enemy, the enemy would disable the player’s movements. This was the plan, however, in the post-production, the core game mechanic was changed so it fits in with the story and also the game.
The post-production unit was making Project Isolation. This was anything from 3D modelling the prison cells, environments and prison models in Maya. Next was texturing these models in Substance Painter. Once textured, it was finally imported into Unity Engine. In Unity, I did programming to make the game functional. 8 different scenes had to be created and coded within Project Isolation. Once the game was functional, I released Project Isolation to game testers who played the game for any bugs/glitches and once logged, I began to fix the game via future updates. All in all, from start to finish, Project Isolation was created within 7 months. October 2020 – May 2021
