The sustainable future of traditional crafts in Cyprus

This photographic work is inspired by the Cyprus culture and is explored ideas around cultural appropriation and how the traditional crafts are fading out through the years. This project is created after wide research and the analysis of the Cypriot craftspeople interviews. Christofidi was inspired by the traditional “Lefkara lace” and by using modern techniques such as laser-cut, she recreated the contemporary form of the traditional Cypriot lace.  In her practice, she used a transparent box that symbolizes the “display window” of the cultural heritage of Cyprus and also it can be a “protective capsule” of the Cypriot culture through this changing world. Christofidi wanted to present the culture of her country and how the traditional artefacts have been changed through the years. By applying them into the “display window”, she was trying to protect, preserve and maintain them.
