What is a void, does it have a surface, can it be held, can it exist inside another, can it be broken or lost?
This collection of work has emerged from exploring potential roles and parameters surrounding a void. It focuses on the space, in, around and through objects. Unanswered questions encircling the void have been integral to my practice, encouraging me to explore their potential answers through different materials and processes. Exploring the negative voids surrounding architecture whilst travelling helped me to develop the forms used, and through the process of slip casting I was able to represent the infinite structure of a void, making each piece unique. As my work emerged, it took on an industrial aesthetic supported by the unconventional materials and the method of casting the negative voids. It was for this reason it was important my designs remained out of the ‘decorative’ category for jewellery. The void, an intriguing subject to me was something I wanted to instill within my work offering ambiguity to both wearer and viewer.
