This project explores the psychological problem of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The basic characteristic of NPD is the exaggeration of self-worth, when self-esteem is very fragile.
People who suffer from this disorder have an almost paranoid pursuit of maintaining a perfect image and gaining a recognition from others. They refute criticism, keeping others at a distance. Once this perfect performance is broken, it is difficult for them to accept, and can trigger a need to belittle and hurt others.
Thorny creatures have an inbuilt ability to physically protect themselves from danger and predators. Reflecting on ideas of people with NPD imprisoning themselves with invisible spikes, I aim to simulate the shapes and structural characteristics of these creatures to make a series of designs which explore movable structures, simulating the reactions of thorny creatures in dangerous situations.
