For my Foundation Diploma Final Major Project I wanted to explore using illustrations in surface pattern design and to give the designs a functional role in homeware. My theme idea was to bring nature imagery and motifs inspired by the great outdoors into homes; exterior inspiration into interior designs. My final collection of four repeat patterns were inspired by the painting “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose” by John Singer Sargent which I saw on my visit to Tate Britain. The painting depicts two children in an English garden with lanterns at twilight. I wanted to capture an essence of magical summer evenings in my pattern collection, and to display them for homeware I printed them on ceramic mugs and a cushion.
The beauty of nature is a great inspiration in my creative works, and I am going on to study BA Illustration at Arts University Bournemouth.
