Akeisha Walters is a London-based painter whose work facilitates an ongoing dialogue about the black maternal figure, she aims to present an empowering and celebratory perspective.
Through her figurative imagery she explores themes of postpartum care, identity, beauty, and womanhood, she combines traditional portrait paintings, bold colours, textile collage and pastel patterns to develop works that are eclectic and intricate. Walters often begins her process with photographs of herself and her daughter allowing the pencil and her memory to guide her creative process; by using her photographs as a referencing point, she creates a body of work that is not only personal but universally depicts the roles of motherhood and its intricacies. Walters invites viewers to engage with themes of empowerment, identity, and the multifaceted experiences of Black mothers in modern society, featuring stylised depictions of women with natural hair, adorned with bold Adinkra accessories and floral elements. These compositions evoke a sense of joy, strength, and identity, reflecting a celebration of Black culture and beauty.
