Before you are a sequence of illustrated moments from the 1872 novel Carmilla by Sheridan La Fanu. A book often forgotten but predates Bram Stokers DRACULA.

I wanted to reinterpret this story from a queer, 21st century, female perspective, to bring attention to the dark predatory nature of the Vampire but also the queer sexuality highlighted metaphorically through the presence of blood.

The final illustration is of the male characters killing Carmilla and draining her of all her blood. I have interpreted this as them smothering her queer identity and affections for Laura, the protagonist of the story, who in my view, has clear affection towards Carmilla.
