Charlie, an interdisciplinary artist pursuing a BA in Fine Art at the University for the Creative Arts, brings a unique perspective to her work. Her recent pieces, spanning sculpture, photography, and performance, delve into her journey with her body, the complexities of identity, and a quest to address profound issues with a touch of fun.
Charlie enjoys finding beauty in the broken and fun in the face of adversity. Looking at these subjects through the lens of her body has been significant because of the changes to her body caused by the treatment of breast cancer. Inevitably, her relationship with her body has evolved. She is interested in what is considered normal or beautiful and how we can frame things differently through cultural and historical differences. Charlie has previously explored the concept of organic entropy and the evolution of matter. By challenging the status quo through her art, she invites the audience to start a conversation about things they may not feel comfortable discussing.
Charlie’s art is not just a visual experience but an invitation for the audience to engage in a dialogue. She encourages voyeurism, the desire to look without being seen looking, and openly invites her audience to challenge their preconceived notions. She fosters open conversation and genuine curiosity by addressing the ‘elephant in the room ‘. This interaction with the audience creates a subtle tension that keeps them returning for more.
Charlie recognises that change can be challenging to accept, but realising that it is an integral part of survival makes us unique and can only be positive. In summary, Charlie’s work comes down to the ego and perspective.
