Claire Quick

Artist in Residence

My work is inspired by nature and the natural forms that we see all around us. I have a real sense of discovery, exploration and experimentation and the natural world is continually changing so there is a large canvas to explore.

The themes in my work are based on my observations, and how I can interpret these. For example, the textural patterns in rock formations, the patterns created on the surface of the water from light to the structures we see in natural flora such as lichen and bark.

I use photography to capture that moment in time, and then through experimentation and drawing develop and idea. To capture my interpretation, I use a variety of processes including drawing, mould forming, wax manipulation and reticulation to capture that organic, textual quality, that I am looking for.

The main process that I have been using in my residency is lost wax casting where I can capture the organic textures and forms.  I have worked with different types of wax including the Japanese wax Mitsuro Hikeme to create striated textures and I have also used wax to build textures and sculptural forms. I have also worked with wax to explore sculpturing in miniature forms of the human body to see how these can be portrayed using lost wax casting.

I work mainly with silver, and I incorporate semi-precious gemstones using the cast in place method where the gemstones are set in the wax and the molten silver encases the gemstones when it is poured through the lost wax casting process. This can create some unusual and exciting results which I am continually exploring and developing.

Observing various natural environments has inspired me to explore texture and surface to create jewellery that has an organic, tactile quality.

I have had a great opportunity as Artist in Residence at UCA (Academic year 23-24) to really develop my skills of working with wax using the lost wax casting process, which is an area I will further develop in my practice.
