Federica Giarè

Giarè is currently exploring forms of representation of masculine and butch queer women and sapphic people, looking at stereotypes and expression of gender, contrast softness and strength, through close observations of gestures, body language, clothing and personal space. This comes from a clear lack of non-stereotypical representation in mainstream media, and a desire to create more genuine and honest imagery from within the community itself and through a relational and collaborative approach. Identifying as a masc lesbian herself, she observes ways in which parts of society respond to gender non-conforming people. This project comes from a desire to create genuine and honest imagery from within the community itself by collaborating with the subjects from the portraits.
