I am a Visual Communication practitioner with an interest in textiles. For this project, I wanted to highlight women in aviation, since aviation is a passion of mine. My favourite aircraft is Concorde, and unfortunately, only 2 women flew Concorde, out of over 200 total pilots, across 2 airlines. So, I designed a fictional campaign called “Fly With Her,” with the main piece being a costume of Concorde, alongside a graphic introducing Barbara Harmer, British Airways’ only Concorde pilot. I thought the costume brought to life an iconic retired aircraft, and also fit into what I want to do after graduation: costume creation. For this project, I built upon pre-established skills with textile work, as well as experimenting with new methods and materials to create something unique and eye-catching. I created the Concorde costume using primarily EVA foam, spray paint, satin fabric, and Plexiglass. I took the final photos of the costume at Heathrow Airport, Concorde’s main airport. The poster uses photos I took of Concorde, the sky, and a photo of the costume. This project combined both my love of aviation and my love of costume creation. I want to work in textiles after I graduate, and forge a career in it. In the summers, I run a business for it, and have successfully completed almost 10 costumes for individual clients.
