Self Portrait (09/11/2024)
The 221 cubes of my piece represent the heartbeats of a single minute within an episode of SVT that occurred on the 9th of November 2024. My health is a fundamental part of my life and underpins my artistic practice, it is an inescapable reality, invisible to most.
This work is not intended to induce feelings of pity, or to represent me as some fragile Thing on the verge of breaking- it is a refusal to hide from the public the fact that I am disabled, that my heart does not work as it should, and to myself, personally, it is an artwork that in its making has allowed me to find some peace with these facts.
My work spans various mediums- textile, print, glass, ink, with the Blue Square as a repeating motif throughout. A simple shape and colour that can be a vessel for interaction, emotion, and identity.
