Hi! My name is Lauren Denyer, a 2D animator with a love of analogue materials and bold transitions. The art of taking a still image and bringing it to life through animation has always been magical to me, so I knew this is what I want to do with my life.
In my recent project ‘Divide’, I explore life within a divorced family – the positives as well as the negatives. With it being such a huge factor in my life, I feel it is important to speak about a subject that is often surrounded with stigma. While looking to see what else is out there on this subject, I was surprised how little there is from the point of view of the child. I wanted to connect with a wider audience of children of divorce of all ages, while also reaching divorced parents.
In a growing world of digital art and technology, I find beauty in the simple marks of pencils, paints, charcoals and inks which are seen throughout all my work. Analogue materials bring a personal connection, something I wanted clear throughout this animation. I often use sound versus dialogue as a narrative tool, trying to create connection and metaphor through music paired with visuals. This is the first film I have done a voiceover, allowing me to really push myself with semiotics and transitions in and out of scenes. I wanted to keep a calming atmosphere through limited colour, adding bursts of colour for key and positive moments.
Animation is such a beautiful medium for storytelling and connecting through semiotics and movement. I am eager to break into this industry and work alongside other passionate animators to bring stories to life.
