The “House of Creative Activism” is a hub for the people and organisations that are being displaced from the city of Porto. Over-tourism and gentrification have caused rising rent prices, pushing the local people out of their home.
Located in the heart of the historic Ribeira district, there is enormous potential for engagement and disrupting public life as many people visit the neighbouring landmarks that include Porto Cathedral and São Bento train station. The demonstration platform faces the busy main street so members can perform to the city. The interactive facades with large billboards communicate events, campaigns and messages to all passers-by.
The public library with a triple-height atrium and pyramid skylight creates an open airy space that makes studying creative activism more accessible, bringing together a diversity of voices to learn, debate, discuss and exchange knowledge.
Creative Activism combines the creative power of the arts to evoke an emotional response with the passion and strategy of activism to effectively bring about social change. This public centre allows the people of Porto and beyond to actively fight the issues that face the city, nation and world.
