Hi! My name is Lucy Garrod, and my design work evolves around history, gothic themes and old printing styles. Unlike modern approaches, I choose to incorporate traditional methods within my outcomes and development processes. In my future career, I wish to focus on the publishing industry and designing book covers.

‘Save a Penny’ is a brand which expresses cheaper and easier ways of living inspired by methods from the past. This goes from making handmade cleaners to long-lasting simple food recipes. My aim was to design a brand that brings nostalgia to my user alongside stressing the importance of saving money in today’s economy. To do this, I made a contrast of historical design elements and modernism through my logo design and type choices. The inspiration for this came from my own upbringing, and other perspectives on the challenges faced during the cost-of-living crisis from my own primary research.

For my ISTD brief ‘Books Still’ I focused on an extract from Chapter 26 of Dracula. I gained some of the most ‘inappropriate’ pieces of text that Bram Stoker published and emphasised them in a small book specifically focusing on expressing the shock culture within my type layout. I chose to do this as in 1897, many critics and members of the public found various parts of his novel grotesque. Within my outcome I wanted to prove that his work is still successful and a strong piece of literature despite the views it received back then, and even now today.
