Theme

My name is Madeleine Thomas and I was the lead developer on At Death We Part.

This project was a collaboration between myself and two other games students; The artist James Davies, and the designer Marcus Nobs.

The art style for our game was heavily inspired by games like the Paper Mario series, whilst gameplay elements and the environmental art was inspired by the games LittleBigPlanet and Little Nightmares.

At Death we Part is a 2.5D puzzle-platformer game where the player must use their light and dark powers to survive in this storybook-like world.

The core mechanic revolves around the characters being able to transition between each other, utilising their unique abilities to solve mechanical and platforming puzzles in order to progress; the light form allows the player to dash as quickly as light and the dark form allows the player to conjure platforms mid-air to allow them to temporarily reposition themselves as they surpass puzzles.

Whilst the player is traversing through the world they will have to dodge enemy ghosts that attack them on sight, they will also need to mind their step as there are ghosts in the floor that wish to pull them into the abyss.

However throughout their journey the player will encounter friendly ghosts that will give them hints on how to progress through the level. The goal is to gather 3 keys and exit the door to complete the game.

Thanks to the artist on this project James Davies I was able to make the game look like a living storybook. So for those who look deeper at the game they may be able to see a hidden story hinted at in the background.
