Mixed Fabrics: Intertwined Together is a celebration on mixed-race relationships, I want to highlight not only the beauty of these relationships but also the racism that persists towards these coupes even today. As someone in a mixed-race relationship it is important more than ever to highlight these issues as the current societal shift overwhelms not just mixed-race couples but every couple.
The celebration is a textile wedding cake with 3D scanned and printed wedding toppers painted to look like myself and my partner. By using two fabrics of cultural significance and history (traditional Indian saree fabric and English plaid) along with the handmade lotus flowers and Lancaster roses which are both national flowers of there respective countries, it creates not only a visually stunning design but a beautiful mix of cultural patterns and history.
The hanging eyes are painted and laser cut in a way that makes them appear as they are following the viewer around the room to create a sense of unease to reflect the feeling of being stared, unable to look away or leave the judgmental gaze a struggle that many mixed-race couples have to unfortunately deal with.
