“A Performance Score” is an installation and series of films exploring relationships between body, material, and space, with a particular focus on the industrial. The work considers labour and physical work as sculptural and artistic practices in themselves. Through choreographed performances, rope becomes a tool for connection and play, encouraging body and material to act as one continuous line moving through space.
Site and industrial history are central to the work. Filmed at Bloors Wharf, a site formerly used for industrial activity, the performances reconnect with the location’s past functions and embodied histories. The rope used throughout the work was donated by The Ropery at Chatham Dockyard and carries its own industrial lineage through its manufacture and use.
By engaging with something heavy, resistant, and traditionally associated with labour, the work transforms industrial material into a conduit for playfulness, movement, and connection. Through these encounters, viewers are encouraged to reconsider their own relationships to material, labour, and site within their everyday.
