In the ever-evolving field of interior design, window displays have emerged as a powerful medium for storytelling and visual communication. Far beyond their traditional role of showcasing products, modern window displays serve as immersive experiences that engage passersby, evoke emotions, and stimulate curiosity. My thesis project explores the dynamic intersection of design, branding, and consumer interaction through the lens of window displays.
Through this project, I investigate the role of spatial design, lighting, color, materials, and visual hierarchy in crafting a display that not only highlights the product but also creates a memorable narrative. Window displays offer a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of design, serving as a stage where art, architecture, and advertising converge.
By examining both traditional and contemporary approaches, I aim to demonstrate how thoughtful and innovative window displays can influence consumer behavior, elevate brand identity, and transform everyday spaces into captivating visual environments.
This project ultimately seeks to answer the question: How can window display effectively leverage visual communication and storytelling techniques to enhance customer perception and engagement with a retail brand or product?
This window display, titled PINK FEATHERS IN THE TROPICAL WORLD, is part of a conceptual journey that blends storytelling with fashion presentation. The idea draws inspiration from a pair of flamingos on a world tour, symbolizing elegance, grace, and migration across diverse landscapes.
The imagery of flamingos, with their vivid pink feathers, becomes the heart of the display. Their presence not only injects tropical energy but also connects with the spirit of freedom and exploration. These feathers serve as a striking prop to accentuate the women’s accessories collection, specifically the purses on display. By surrounding the products with lush green leaves and bright flamingo feathers, the arrangement establishes a natural yet playful stage. The soft green tones evoke tranquility, while the bold pink highlights add vibrancy and dynamism. This deliberate color interplay ensures that the accessories remain the focal point, with the natural elements acting as an enhancing frame.
In my thesis project, I explored layering techniques of paper to create depth, dimension, and visual intrigue within the window display. By overlapping different textures, weights, and transparencies of paper, I was able to mimic natural elements such as tropical leaves and feathers while maintaining a handcrafted, artistic quality. The layering process introduced a sense of movement and fluidity, transforming flat materials into dynamic, sculptural forms. This technique not only enhanced the three-dimensional impact of the display but also highlighted the contrast between delicate craftsmanship and bold visual storytelling, reinforcing the fusion of nature and fashion in my concept.
Paper Layering Technique – Design Process
1. Material Selection
I began by experimenting with different types of paper—ranging from lightweight tissue and tracing paper to heavier card stock. Each type offered a unique texture and translucency, allowing me to mimic natural elements such as leaves and feathers.
2. Cutting and Shaping
Using precision cutting tools, I shaped the paper into organic forms. Some were smooth and curved, resembling large tropical leaves, while others were slender and layered, inspired by the fine structure of flamingo feathers.
3. Layering and Overlapping
The key technique was overlapping multiple layers to create depth. I alternated between opaque and semi-transparent sheets, producing a play of light and shadow. This layering effect gave the display a three-dimensional quality, making it visually engaging from different angles.
4. Arrangement and Composition
The paper layers were arranged in cascading patterns, starting from a dense base and gradually becoming lighter toward the top. This technique created movement and guided the eye toward the focal products—the accessories in the window.
5. Integration with Lighting
Lighting was carefully considered to enhance the paper’s qualities. Warm spotlights illuminated the opaque layers, while backlighting emphasized the translucency of the thinner sheets. This interplay added vibrancy and atmosphere, echoing the tropical setting of the concept.
6. Final Outcome
The layered paper installation transformed a flat material into a sculptural storytelling device. It framed the products beautifully, added depth to the scene, and reinforced the fusion of nature and fashion at the heart of the thesis project.
