I am a figurative painter and I am exhibiting 8 pictures in the Herbert Read Gallery. My particular exhibition is titled “An Odyssey”. These paintings are explorations of Homers story The Odyssey, with many personal and artistic/historical references. They encompass a project I have been pursuing for four years now. The recuring motifs of disparate characters stranded in the settings of caves, islands and ruined cities, reference scenes from the Odyssey that overlap with my own concerns of grief, memory, history. These things are combined with the conscious references of found images, the accidents of working with the possibilities of paint and, the stumbling upon the previously unknown unconscious impulses that truly lies behind the image. The layout of the show includes pictures on three of the four walls of the room. Four on one, three on the other, one on the last. All but one of the paintings are oil on canvas, 80/120 cm, the other 4ft by 5ft.
