My final project, “Tales of Tamil,” is a jewellery collection that embodies the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Tamil Nadu, specifically drawing inspiration from the majestic Tanjore Big Temple, also known as the Brihadeeswara Temple. This temple, built by the great Chola king Rajaraja Chola I in the 11th century, stands as a monumental example of Dravidian architecture, with its intricate carvings, towering gopurams, and a sense of divine grandeur that has withstood the test of time.
This collection aims to capture the essence of the temple’s architectural splendour and the spiritual depth that it represents. Each piece is meticulously designed to reflect the intricate details found in the temple’s sculptures and motifs, such as the elaborate carvings of deities, mythical creatures, and floral patterns that adorn the temple walls. These elements are reimagined through the lens of contemporary jewellery design, resulting in pieces that are both timeless and modern.
The “Tales of Tamil” collection integrates traditional Tamil craftsmanship techniques, such as Kundan and stone setting, with modern technologies like CAD modelling and 3D printing. This fusion of old and new allows for the creation of pieces that not only honour the past but also push the boundaries of contemporary design. The use of materials like gold, silver, and gemstones is carefully chosen to evoke the opulence and sacredness associated with the Tanjore Big Temple.
Through this collection, I seek to narrate the stories of Tamil heritage, celebrating its artistic and spiritual legacy while making it accessible to the present and future generations. “Tales of Tamil” is not just a collection of jewellery but a wearable tribute to the enduring beauty and cultural significance of Tamil Nadu’s history.
