My name is Victoria Oniosun. I am a visual artist, whose work explores the themes of femininity, companionship, personal and societal identity, and women’s empowerment in Black society. Drawing from my personal experience, I capture in my palette knife scenes the society’s stereotype about the female gender, where facial expressions and body language remain undetailed yet communicate volumes about our individual and collective life experiences as black women. Each stroke, each thick application of paint, symbolizes the multifaceted nature of womanhood. Just as the impasto technique builds up the surface of the canvas, so do women build upon their experiences, histories, and emotions to shape who they are. This body of work explores the experiences of these Black women with their natural hair and how each person’s different lives and circumstances directly affect their relationship with their hair.
