I have adopted a continuity of storytelling for this collection, my work is inspired by the many injustices suffered by historical women in the Qing dynasty under a patriarchal society and the brokenness of love to eventually love themselves. I use the softness of felt and the hardness of woven metal combined to represent the resilience of women. The different pieces show the inner evolution of the woman at different times.
The sequence is
1.”Winding” – A woman bound and confused by the rules of traditional society.
2.”Awakening” – A woman in the palace gradually awakening from her bondage.
3.”Pierced” – The woman is stabbed by society.
4.”Resilient”-The process of a woman’s gradual growth and emergence as she realises her own value and ability.
5.”Liberation” Remove the label/handcuffs of commodification and focus on being yourself.
