Passionate about typography and editorial design; my work demonstrates a pragmatic, functional attitude, with a deep understanding for legibility and readability; playful and experimental where appropriate. My dissertation challenged the perpetuation of disproven dyslexia-theories by the recommendation of dyslexia-friendly fonts, suggesting and testing an alternative individualised support strategy.
Stepping outside of my comfort zone, my final major project is a graphical exploration of the life and work of Charles Mingus, with focus on his studio album ‘The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’, supported by his autobiography, ‘Beneath the Underdog’. Contextually, my project is aimed at those with an interest in Jazz, Charles Mingus and Graphic Design. Conceptually, I am challenging the way in which music and media is consumed by Gen Z; hardwired to seek constant dopamine gratification. My project encourages the appreciation of Mingus’ ‘The Black Saint’ as intended; a complete body of work, challenging the digression of music from being experienced as an album to singles and now 30-second-snippets as backdrop to a TikTok.
For my outcomes, I have created an image-based A4 zine, packaged in a carboard sleeve to include an A2 poster and CD. To accompany this; a short animation bringing the visuals of my zine to life, accompanied by samples from each track off of Mingus’ album.
