Do-Young Kim

Neighbourhood in the Tailbone is a work about the sense of place held by individuals living within a uniform built environment. Fifteen standardised spaces, selected from Seoul, South Korea, where the artist lived across more than ten moves, are connected within a VR environment in ways that differ from reality.

Visitors wear a VR headset and headphones, and navigate the fifteen spaces using VR controllers. Within each space, they encounter everyday ambient sounds spatialised in 3D, alongside photographs from the artist’s family archive, taken in the real places each virtual space was based on.
