The Hearth follows the motto of ‘Do not teach a drowning person how to swim,’ allowing clients to find solace in self-maintenance areas in therapy spaces, showers, the garden, and a hearth for their wellness and security. The programme provides a warm, welcoming centre for unhoused people and those at risk of homelessness during economic downturns and beyond. It employs clients at The Hall, the on-site cafe, and trains them for future employment in classrooms specialising in IT, art, and woodworking. The architecture brings the luxurious historic features of Canterbury to life while celebrating modern achievements, building clients’ self-worth and identity within the local community.
