Emily Thompson

Throughout my practice, I have been facinated by cats, studying both their form and their rich historical significance. I enjoy exploring the strange positions in which cats squash, twist and shape themselves, appearing elegant yet awkward. Their relationship with humans has been complicated and full of contradicions, as we shift between revering and resenting them in contexts such as worship, religion, spirituality and internet culture. Yet the cat exists unapologetically. I aim to capture this dichotomy in my work through oil pastels and sculpture, creating pieces that are chaotic yet calm, messy yet organised, playful yet sinister. I hope viewers can take time with my work to think about our connection to these innocent creatures that we have made both friend and foe.
