Hanna Selmeci would like to argue that cars exist in a plane closer to the divine than the human beings who manufacture or operate them. How could something man-made become more-than human? Cars lack the mortality of humans and yet they move, “respire” and some newer models even respond to their environments. These attributes are some of the defining features of an organism, yet there is no life to take from the machinery of the vehicle. Simultaneously, the motor of a car is its heart and soul, mainly because the machine can no longer travel without it. Wheels, windows, doors and even seats become optional accessories when safety is ignored. But remove the engine, and the car ceases to be a vehicle at all. It becomes a corpse.
