Belle is a photographic series in which Izzy Campion performs as the constructed character, Belle, who is shaped by the visual language of social media. With the use of wigs, makeup, prosthetics and masks she physically recreates the effects of filters, photo-editing, and AI-generated imagery. Some of the masks Belle wears are derived directly from real-world Instagram filters, translating digital enhancements into tangible forms.
The work asks what happens when virtual beauty standards are pulled into the real world. Detached from the seamlessness of the screen, these transformations become uncanny, excessive, and visibly constructed.
Belle embodies the fluid, unstable identities that are often performed online – constantly reshaped to satisfy the algorithm of fabricated attraction. Through repetitions and variation the project exposes how digital culture fragments identity and distorts perceptions of beauty, producing ideals that are both aspirational and unattainable. Campion encourages the viewer to reflect critically on their own relationship between beauty, performance, technology, and self-perception.
