1- For my minor project, I created the production design for an adaptation of the sci-fi and dystopian book ‘The Eye of Minds’ by James Dashner, for the location ‘Shady Towne’. The Eye of Minds is a sci-fi book set in a future where civilians live in a virtual world called the VirtNet. The story follows Michael and his two friends Sarah and Bryson, as the Virtual Network Security (VNS) recruits them to find a dangerous hacker called Kaine who is holding players captive inside the VirtNet. To find information of the hacker, they have to visit Cutter’s barber shop which is located in Shady Towne. Shady Towne is inside the virtual world and is a branch of Old townes. It is where less mainstream affairs like digital-tattoo parlors and pawn shops lined a cobblestone road. The main characters arrive from a very lively, massive futuristic mall, so by the time they arrive to Shady Towne, there is a visual contrast where it looks isolated and grotty.I took inspiration from the streets of new york, as well as cyberpunk neon signs and colours. I created concept art, a 3D digital model, sketches, technical drawings, a white card model and storyboards to propose my design.
2- For my final major project, I created a speculative production design for an adaptation of Weeping Town, from an excerpt of The Winds of Winter written by George R. R. Martin. The scene and design follows Arianne Martell’s journey, as she travels along the south coast of Cape Wrath to Weeping Town during a period of political unrest. The project focused on the exterior location mentioned in the text: the docks. I wanted to create the opening of when they first arrive into the town. It is described as a market town with peaked roofs, wooden walls and crooked alleys. It has a thriving port where most of the regions trade comes through. I showed this with market stalls of different occupations, barrels, crates and grain bags in the set decoration. I also focused on size and space by researching the size of port towns in real life and in the fictional universe. Weathered materials were also used in the design, as Weeping Town is located in a location that is prone to storms. I created concept visuals, a 3d digital model, technical drawings and a white card model to follow the production design process.
