To minimise Denmark’s gender gap, this project “Almen Kindergarten” in Nordhavn, Copenhagen is designed with a connected women’s refuge to enable women to find their way back into society by teaching life skills within the school – breaking down gender stereotypes from early years. The kindergarten runs by the Hjalli Model, an Icelandic curriculum that liberates children from traditional gender roles and stereotypes – ensuring each gender receive equal opportunity to thrive. The building provides a communal kitchen, children’s library, auditorium and a MUGA for the local community, alongside playful classrooms in the kindergarten and bedrooms and communal spaces in the women’s refuge.
