Hello, I am Sakshi Mohapekar, an MA Interior Design student from the 2023-24 batch at UCA, Canterbury. My thesis project centers on redesigning the London Victoria Coach Station, focusing on creating a Seamless Transiting Experience Through Biophilia. In an era where urban spaces are increasingly congested and stressful, my work seeks to transform one of the London’s busiest transport hubs into an environment that prioritizes the health and well-being of its users, aligning with broader citywide goals for sustainability and livability.

The concept behind my thesis is rooted in biophilia—the innate human connection to nature. By incorporating natural elements into the design of the coach station, I aim to alleviate the stress and discomfort commonly associated with urban travel. The redesign includes the integration of green spaces, natural light, and sustainable materials, which together create a soothing and rejuvenating atmosphere for passengers making the space more than just a transit point, but a positive and health-supporting environment.

One of the key elements of my thesis is the redesign of compact spaces within the station, particularly through the creation of the Pret chair—a simple, elegant, and sustainable piece of furniture. The Pret chair is designed to reflect the core branding of Pret A Manger with its red fabric and coffee wood base. Its minimalist design and sustainable materials make it an ideal fit for the station’s revamped interiors, providing passengers with a comfortable seating option that aligns with the broader ecological goals of the project.

In addition to improving comfort, my redesign also addresses practical aspects of the station’s operation. For instance, by relocating the ticket office, I aim to solve issues related to circulation and crowding. This adjustment not only makes the station more navigable but also enhances the overall passenger experience, reducing the stress and confusion that can arise in such a busy environment. The relocation is a strategic move that reflects the station’s new emphasis on ease of movement, accessibility, and passenger comfort.

Moreover, my thesis emphasizes the importance of sustainability in public spaces. Each design decision—from the choice of materials to the layout of seating and service areas—is guided by a commitment to reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. The use of sustainable materials along with other eco-friendly choices throughout the station, supports London’s broader policy objectives.

Overall, my thesis presents a holistic vision for the future of London Victoria Coach Station, the project which aims to transform the station into a space that contributes to the creation of a greener, healthier, and more enjoyable urban environment, in line with London’s efforts to become a safer and more sustainable city.
