SONGKET is a typographic exploration that reinterprets the traditional Malaysian craft through pattern, layering, and imperfection. Inspired by the intricate weaving techniques of Songket, this project develops a contemporary pattern system that transforms motifs into letterforms and visual compositions.
Despite being recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, Songket is gradually becoming disconnected from younger generations due to its perceived rigidity and emphasis on perfection. Through layered typography, tracing paper, and experimental pattern-making, this project aims to reposition Songket as something more accessible, interactive, and contemporary for Gen Z audiences while preserving the essence of its cultural identity.
