Since their introduction in the 1960s, The Daleks have become a cultural icon of British TV, even to those largely unfamiliar with Doctor Who. The goal of this project was to build a functional Dalek prop from the ground up.

This project represented an opportunity for me to utilise and expand upon all of the skillsets I have acquired during my time at university, while satisfying a deep-rooted passion for Doctor Who. Woodwork, metalwork, mechanics, CAD, CNC machining, plastic, and electronics all packaged into one.

My approach, as a modelmaker, was to imagine the BBC or similar production company had commissioned an accurate replica Dalek prop for an upcoming production. With this in mind, the quality of finish, and the ability to build accurately to the real-life props was a central focus. Holding up to scrutiny on screen was the ultimate goal.

To take this even further, the Dalek is finished with the iconic voice and light effects.
