RIBA Bronze Medal Nomination

This is an overview of my final project, Canterbury, Dance!, a public building that invigorates Canterbury with life-affirming contemporary dance.

The 4 part programme offers different levels to get involved at: a public café and courtyard, dance workshops for locals residents, an MA course, and professional dance performances. The aim is to offer dance opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

The building is a mass timber system specifically designed to minimise vibration, with a façade made of locally quarried Kentish Ragstone.

My design process prioritised understanding the architectural context and how people experience space. The building’s final form emerged through a series of iterations, balancing the character of its close-sitting vernacular neighbours with the spatial demands of its own programme.
